Alpine Investors
Based in San Francisco, Alpine Investors' objective is to invest in or acquire small to mid-sized U.S. based companies with EBITDA greater than $2 million. The firm's capital, $500 million under management, may be used to provide full or partial liquidity to entrepreneurs, family members, estates, passive investors or corporate owners. Alpine will also consider minority investments for growth.

Billy Maguy
Billy has spent his career in management consulting and operations. Previously, Billy was the Director of Business Development at Telephia, a wireless industry market intelligence firm, where he was responsible for strategic partnership development and product management. Prior to Telephia, Billy was a management consultant with Swander, Pace and Company where he specialized in strategy and M&A. Billy holds a BS and MS in Industrial Engineering from Stanford University and an MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business. Billy was a member of Stanford’s 1993 NCAA National Championship Water Polo Team and was an Academic All-American.

Housatonic Partners
Housatonic Partners is a private equity investment firm founded in 1994 with over $1 billion in capital under management. The firm invests in growing, profitable companies in the recurring services, media and communications industries. Housatonic Partners has invested in approximately sixty small to mid-sized companies in these industries over the last sixteen years.

Barry D. Reynolds
Mr. Reynolds founded the San Francisco office of Housatonic Partners in 1998. Previously, he was with Trident Capital, a private equity group targeting information and business services companies. Prior to that, he was a Manager with Bain & Company. At Bain, he co-founded the Principal Investor Services practice, consulting to medium and large buyout funds and strategic buyers. During this time, he also worked with Bain Capital and Texas Pacific Group. Earlier in his career, Mr. Reynolds worked as an engineer for the General Electric Company. Mr. Reynolds is a graduate of the University of California at Berkeley and the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he was the Ford Scholar. He is a Director of CaseCentral, Inc.; ProService Hawaii; ServiceSource International, LLC; Signature Wine Cellars, Inc.; and On-Site Dental Care, Inc.

Joseph M. Niehaus
Mr. Niehaus is a career private equity investor, and has been a Managing Director at Housatonic Partners since 2001. Previously, he spent twelve years Hellman & Friedman where he was involved in several of the firm's recurring services, media and communications investments including Eller Media, Falcon Cable, and Mitchell International. Mr. Niehaus began his career in the Merchant Banking department at Morgan Stanley & Co. Mr. Niehaus is a graduate of Dartmouth College and the Harvard Business School. He is a Director of Aircraft Fasteners International, LLC; California Communications, LLC; Continental Fire & Safety Services, LLC; HemaSource, Inc.; and ResponseLink, LLC.

Mark G. Hilderbrand
Mr. Hilderbrand joined Housatonic Partners in 2006, bringing more than ten years of private equity experience to the firm. Most recently, he was a General Partner at Onset Ventures. He previously worked at Summit Partners and Fox Paine & Company, where he focused on recapitalizations and buyouts of software and recurring services-related businesses. Earlier in his career, Mr. Hilderbrand worked as a management consultant at Bain & Company. Mr. Hilderbrand holds a BS from Boston University, an MS from Stanford University, and an MBA from the Harvard Business School. He is a Director of Learner's Digest International; On-Site Dental Care, Inc. and the Harvard Business School Alumni Association of Northern California.

William N. Thorndike Jr.
Mr. Thorndike founded Housatonic Partners in Boston in 1994 and has been Managing Director since that time. Prior to that, Mr. Thorndike worked with T. Rowe Price Associates where he did investment research in the nascent field of business services and Walker & Company where he was named to the Board of Directors. Mr. Thorndike is a graduate of Harvard College and the Stanford Graduate School of Business. He is a Director of Access Information Management; Alta Colleges; Continental Fire & Safety Services, LLC, Carillon Assisted Living, LLC; Liberty Towers, LLC; OASIS Group Ltd.; White Flower Farm, Inc., and a Trustee of Groton School and the College of the Atlantic.

Pacific Lake Partners
Pacific Lake Partners is a private equity fund focused exclusively on making small cap buyouts via the search fund model. Search fund investing consists of providing search and acquisition capital to promising entrepreneurs who are recent graduates of top MBA programs. The entrepreneur’s intent is to acquire a small, established company with revenues of $10 million to $30 million and a history of profits and growth. Pacific Lake Partners was founded by Jim Southern and Coley Andrews with a mission to become the financial capital provider of choice to search fund entrepreneurs.

Jim Southern
Prior to Pacific Lake Partners, Mr. Southern was himself a beneficiary of search fund investors early in his career, resulting in the acquisition of Uniform Printing, a $43 million printer of specialty insurance documents. Investor cash on cash returns during his tenure exceeded 30x the acquisition capital. Since that time, in addition to acquiring two additional business via the search fund model, he has invested in over 45 search funds and acquisitions sourced and managed by search fund entrepreneurs. Mr. Southern holds an MBA from Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Linda, reside in Wolfeboro, NH and Boston, MA.

Coley Andrews
Prior to Pacific Lake Partners, Mr. Andrews worked at Tech for Less, a small, growing, and profitable company owned by two successful search fund entrepreneurs. Mr. Andrews also worked at Golden Gate Capital, a middle-market private equity firm focused on change-intensive investments. Mr. Andrews also was a senior associate at The Parthenon Group, an international strategic consulting firm based in Boston. Mr. Andrews holds an MBA from Stanford’s Graduate School of Business and a BA from Dartmouth College. He and his wife, Alisa, and their two boys reside in San Francisco, CA.

Peterson Partners
Based in Salt Lake City, UT, Peterson Partners is an investment firm that seeks to partner with outstanding entrepreneurs and owners of great companies.  They make investments in growing companies that have attractive market positions and sustainable business models.  They target companies with at least $10M in revenue, positive EBITDA, and located anywhere in the U.S. (with some preference for the Intermountain West region).  They have invested in some of the world’s leading companies like Asurion, JetBlue, and Energy Solutions. 

Joel Peterson
Joel is the founder of Peterson Partners, LP, a regional private equity company based in Salt Lake City. Joel has a long history of successful private equity investments in a variety of industries. He currently teaches Entrepreneurial Management at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business, serves as Director of Stanford GSB Center for Leadership Development and Research, and is Chairman of JetBlue and Director of Franklin Covey. He was formerly Managing Partner of Trammell Crow Company, and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School.

Dan Peterson
Dan is currently the managing partner at Peterson Partners.  Prior to joining Peterson Partners, he was a partner with Peterson Ventures, and prior to that, Managing Director at Z Capital.    He has invested in small, growing companies in a wide range of industries, including high-tech, automotive, training and financial services. Dan was previously a Partner at Trammell Crow Company, and received an MBA from Harvard Business School.  Dan sits on the boards of Asphalt Zipper, BenefitGuard, Cloud Capital and Asset Recovery Corporation.

Brandon Cope
Prior to joining Peterson Partners, Brandon was a partner with Peterson Ventures where he led numerous investments in search funds, small, cash flowing businesses, and early-stage companies.   Prior to joining Peterson Ventures, Brandon worked for McKinsey & Company, an international management consulting firm.  While at McKinsey, he focused on growth strategy, organizational transformation, and operational improvement projects across numerous industries.  Brandon has an MBA from The Kellogg School of Management and M.S. and B.S. degrees in Accounting from Brigham Young University.  He currently serves on the boards of several portfolio companies, including HireVue, UnitedLayer, LifeSeasons, and Veri-Tax.

RATAVA Partners
Ratava Partners is a firm specializing in Innovative Integration Investment and Portfolio Company Management. They invest in start-up companies with innovative concepts and technologies in the Personal Security, Asset Tracking, and Healthcare markets. They create greater leverage for revenue growth and EBITDA optimization through combining established companies with startups that provide product and services in like markets. Additionally, they provide a set of services including assessment, integration, and management of portfolio asset companies which optimizes the right product mix, improves the sales channel strategy, revamps back office processes, and cuts operational costs while improving efficiencies.

Bipin Agarwal
Bipin Agarwal, Managing Partner of RATAVA Partners, is a consultant to one of the top private equity firm in the world with asset in excess of 50 billion. He provides due-diligence for new acquisition, and IT strategy for portfolio companies. He also serves as a senior management consultant to several startups to help them define business strategy and go-to market strategy. He defined and launched offshore management consulting services to help clients build or optimize their offshore IT operations. He has served on the board of directors for a number of companies. Bipin was a co-founder, Director, and Executive Vice President of the North American Operations at Tanning Technology Corporation. As a member of the company’s operating committee and board, he participated in M&A activity, developed strategic business alliances, maintained analyst relationships, and helped take the company public in 1999. He has been a seasoned Senior Executive with track record of driving visionary technology solutions for start-up, high growth, and fortune 500 organizations. He has been delivery focused, proactive and has had committed leadership in development of high-performance teams to support both business and information-technology initiatives. He has extensive background in software development and infrastructure build out.

Sal Mahbouba
Sal has more than 25 years of management experience in the high technology and biomedical industries. Prior to forming Ratava Partners, Sal spent five years with Avaya as their GM/VP of Avaya’s Global Support Services (GSS) business where he transformed a $5B market leader in IP telephony and telecommunication solutions to a next generation capability company that could scale and grow globally. In addition he has held numerous senior leadership positions in Fortune 500 companies such as Oracle, Fujitsu, and others. Sal also partners with entrepreneurial startups, corporations, and Boards of Directors to build “Operational Centers of Excellence”, sharing best practices that lead to operating profitable organizations. Sal extends his leadership acumen to his local community, as an active board member with CSIA (Colorado’s Premier Technology Organization), where he is often supporting technology innovators and new business endeavors benefiting companies globally and legislatively.

RHV Capital
RHV Capital, LLC (“RHV”) was formed by the principals of HV Capital Investors, LLC (“HVCI”) for the purpose of investing in search funds. HVCI provides debt financing to lower middle market companies (www.hvcapitalinvestors.com). RHV has invested in 23 search funds over the last three years. It currently has five investments in operating companies acquired by its search funds, and 16 of its search funds are actively looking for acquisitions. RHV plans to continue investing in new search funds in 2011 and beyond.

Glenn Healey
Mr. Healey is currently a Managing Director of HV Capital Investors, LLC and RHV Capital, LLC, which provide debt and equity capital to lower middle market private companies. Prior to that, Glenn was the CEO of several different companies over the last 22 years ranging in size from $2 million to $90 million in revenue. He completed 45 transactions at those companies, including acquisition, financing and divestiture transactions. Glenn is a Certified Public Accountant and a graduate of the University of Missouri and the Harvard Business School.

Paul D. Rogers
Paul Rogers is currently a Partner at HV Capital Investors, LLC and RHV Capital, LLC, which focuses on debt and equity investments in private companies, respectively. Prior to that, Paul worked for 22 years in the financial services industry with CIBC and its predecessor company, Wood Gundy Inc. From 1999 to 2004, Paul was President of CIBC World Markets Corp., the US investment banking subsidiary of CIBC. In this capacity, Paul was responsible for all of the US businesses of CIBC World Markets. Paul earned a B.Sc. Honours degree in Mathematics and Physics from the Royal Military College of Canada and also received an MBA with high distinction from Harvard Business School. Paul received an M.Sc. degree in Applied Physics from NJIT and is also pursuing a Ph.D. program for Applied Physics at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.

 

Individual Investors

A.J. Wasserstein
A. J. Wasserstein is a private investor, with a long term orientation, interested in lower middle market businesses, and philanthropic organizations, where he can be positively impactful using his experiences, time and capital. Mr. Wasserstein was the founder and CEO of ArchivesOne, the third largest records management company in the United States. He successfully built ArchivesOne into a super-regional records management company employing 400 people before selling to Iron Mountain (NYSE: IRM) in 2007 after 17 years of operation. At ArchivesOne, 38 acquisitions were successfully completed to supplement growth. A. J. graduated from Colgate University and received his MBA from New York University. He completed the Owner/President/Manager Executive Education Program at Harvard Business School. Mr. Wasserstein is the Chairman of American Auto Auction, LLC; a board member at Contango Capital (owner of POU, LLC); a board member at Facility Maintenance, LLC; a board member at MRA Inc.; an Operating Partner at Baird Capital Partners; a trustee at the Connecticut Community Foundation; a trustee at Waterbury Hospital and a board member at Global Giving, LLC.

Bob Dahl
Bob Dahl is a founding Member of Arrowhawk Capital Partners, an investment management firm which manages a multi-strategy, institutionally-focused fund. From April 1999 until June 2006, Mr. Dahl served as the head of Global Healthcare for the Carlyle Group, a leading private equity firm with over $50 billion of equity under management, where he was responsible for the firm’s investments in the healthcare field. During his tenure at Carlyle, Mr. Dahl served on the investment committee of the U.S. buyout funds, including the $7.9 billion Carlyle Partners IV and the $3.9 billion Carlyle Partners III funds. Mr. Dahl also served on the investment committee of the $430 million Carlyle Mezzanine Partners.
 
Prior to Carlyle, Mr. Dahl served as co-head of healthcare investment banking in North America at Credit Suisse First Boston. Earlier in his career Mr. Dahl was a CPA for Price Waterhouse. Mr. Dahl is a graduate of the Harvard Business School, where he was elected a Baker Scholar and received a Loeb Rhodes fellowship. He received a B.A. from Middlebury College. Mr. Dahl is a director of Amkai LLC, Ika Systems Corporation and Slate Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Christoph Ludwig
Christoph has over 15 years of leadership experience in the enterprise-software space in various operational roles in customer support and development. Currently he is leading the U.S. operations of the Installed-Base Maintenance & Support department for SAP Applications with teams in Palo Alto, CA, and Newtown Square, PA. Prior to that, Christoph was worldwide Development Support Manager in the GBU Commerce, responsible for SAP SRM. Prior to that, he was Support Manager Americas at SAP Markets, and Manager of 7x24 Development Support – Finance & Accounting. Prior to that, he was Senior Developer at SAP in Germany. Christoph holds an MBA with Honors from University of California, Berkley, and an M.S. in Physics from Johann Wolfgang Goethe-Universität Frankfurt am Main, Germany. His special interests include entrepreneurship and finance, and he is cofounder of Plenty Of Bonds Insurance Services, LLC.

David Lazier
Mr. Lazier is a Managing Partner at TD Investment Company, and also serves as President of American Security Products, a leading manufacturer of high-security safes. He has also served as Controller, Vice President of Sales and Co-President of Nelson Nameplate Company, a manufacturer of durable graphics and membrane switches. Prior to joining Nelson, Mr. Lazier worked as an engineer with IBM Corporation from 1982-1984. He is currently on the board of Nelson Nameplate Company, American Security Products, Columbia Sanitary Products and St. Mark's Episcopal Church. He has also served on the board of Bristol Corporation, XACT Telecommunication, Glendale Memorial Hospital Foundation and the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity. Mr. Lazier received his Bachelor's Degree in Industrial Engineering from Northwestern University

Gerald Risk
In his role as President, Gerald is responsible for Asurion's day-to-day operations, customer service, and financial and strategic performance. Gerald is a long serving member of the Asurion management team who brings a wealth of business, entrepreneurial and financial leadership skills to his role. He joined Asurion's management team as CFO in 1999 and has helped Asurion achieve rapid growth since that time. Prior to joining Asurion, Gerald worked as an investment banker with Goldman, Sachs & Co. in San Francisco, Hong Kong and New York. Gerald has also worked for Hambrecht and Quist, LLC, and Toronto Dominion Capital. He holds an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar, and a bachelor's degree in commerce with honors from Queen’s University in Canada. Gerald is a member of the Board of Directors of Carillon Assisted Living and Copay Solutions and is a member of the Board of Trustees of the University School of Nashville.

Hiten Varia
Mr. Varia is an active investor in various software companies including Chairman and Founder at m9 Tech Solutions, and Board Member at Novire Technologies. Prior to founding m9 Tech Solutions, he was a sustaining founder at i2 Technologies spending 17 years across various executive leadership roles including Chief Customer Officer, EVP of Global Customer Operations, Greater Asia Pacific Region, Worldwide development, and Chief Delivery Officer. Mr. Varia is credited with creating a truly world-class development organization fostering innovative approaches to product development and team work. Further, he implemented a number of successful consulting practices that led to i2’s differentiation via value added services delivery. Prior to i2 Mr. Varia served in a variety of senior positions at EDS where he created a thriving consulting practice. Before EDS, he was General Manager of Sylvex Cable in India, a company that manufactures cables. Mr. Varia has an MS in Electrical Engineering, specializing in Computer Architecture and Software Design, from University of Kentucky, and a BS in Electrical Engineering from University of Baroda, India.

Jim Ellis
Mr. Ellis is a Lecturer in Management at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University. He is currently teaching two strategic management courses that center around the early stages of the entrepreneurial process. Mr. Ellis takes a personal interest and enjoys participating in and contributing to the learning process faced by each of his students. Prior to coming to Stanford, Mr. Ellis held a number of positions with both large and small companies. In 1995, Mr. Ellis cofounded Asurion with Kevin Taweel to provide value-added solutions for the wireless communications industry. Previously responsible for Asurion’s sales and marketing efforts, Mr. Ellis is an active member of the company’s board of directors. Mr. Ellis has also held positions as a research associate at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and as a consultant with IMG and Cresap, McCormick, and Paget. He is a member of a number of Boards of Directors including BUILD, Asurion, Service Source Inc., Memento Press, Half Moon Bay Brewing Company, and Southern California Risk Management Associates. Mr. Ellis holds an MBA from Stanford University and a bachelor’s degree with high honors in economics from Dartmouth College. He is also a recipient of Ernst and Young’s prestigious Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Jose Stella
Jose Stella Somoza most recently was the co-founder and president of VIU Media, Puerto Rico’s largest locally-owned outdoor advertising company, which was sold to Lamar Advertising. Prior to becoming president of VIU Media, he was the co-founder and president of Quest Management Corporation, a private equity group formed to identify, acquire, and operate a company in Puerto Rico. Previously, Mr. Stella worked at KPMG Peat Marwick in the middle-market Mergers & Acquisitions Advisory Group. He also worked for UBS and Chase Manhattan Bank. Mr. Stella received the 2004 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Puerto Rico and currently serves as a director of Rocket Learning, LLC and Centros Sor Isolina Ferre, the largest Puerto Rico based not-for-profit organization. Mr. Stella graduated with high honors with a BA in economics, finance and investments from Babson College and graduated cum laude with an MBA from The University of Michigan.

Keith Gillespie
Keith is currently a Managing Director at Alix Partners, a firm specializing in improving corporate financial and operating performance. He is an experienced international consultant and turnaround manager. He has worked in complex situations with clients in North America, Asia, South America, Africa, and Europe. Keith has held senior level positions with leading management consulting companies, as well as senior line management positions in several high tech companies. Prior to joining AlixPartners, Keith served as Vice President of High Tech Consulting for i2 Technologies, Inc. Keith also served as a Senior Vice President at TenFold Corporation, a provider of mission critical software applications. Before coming to TenFold, Keith was at McKinsey & Company, Inc. where he served clients in a variety of industries and was a leader in the firm’s High Tech, Sales Force and Channel Management Practice, and its Marketing Strategy Practice. Keith holds a bachelor's degree in finance from Arizona State University. He earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he graduated with honors as an Arjay Miller Scholar.

Kent Weaver
Kent Weaver is currently Chairman and CEO of Progressive Home Care, a Northern California-based health care company. Previously, Kent held executive positions in marketing and product management for a VC-backed marketing automation startup, as a regional CFO and business analyst in Pepsico's Pizza Hut Division, and as a management consultant at Ernst & Young. He received his MBA from the University of California, Los Angeles and a BS in finance from the University of Southern California. He is currently a board member at VRI, Ascentia Home Care, Discovery Outsourcing, Data Fusion, and P.O.U. Partners.

Kevin Taweel
Since co-founding Asurion in 1994, the company has grown from a small 40 person operation to become the leading global provider of technology protection products with over 10,000 employees worldwide, partnering with many of the world’s top companies and brands. Prior to founding Asurion, Kevin served as Chairman of Mill River Corporation, an investment company. He also worked with many Fortune 500 companies to develop and execute corporate strategies and financial plans while working in Mergers & Acquisitions for the investment bank Salomon Brothers. He earned an MBA from the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University and holds a Bachelor`s degree in Mechanical Engineering from McGill University. Kevin currently serves on the board of ResponseLink. Kevin is also a former recipient of the prestigious Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award.

Rafael Somoza
Rafael Somoza most recently was the co-founder and CEO of VIU Media, Puerto Rico's largest locally-owned outdoor advertising company, which was sold to Lamar Advertising. Prior to becoming CEO of VIU Media, he was the co-founder and CEO of Quest Management Corporation, a private equity group formed to identify, acquire, and operate a company in Puerto Rico. Previously, Mr. Somoza worked at Credit Suisse First Boston, where he was involved in structuring over $1.2 billion in financings, and at Chase Manhattan Bank. Mr. Somoza received the 2004 Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Puerto Rico and currently sits on the board of the Puerto Rico Convention Bureau and EM Assist, LLC. Mr. Somoza graduated magna cum laude with a BA in economics and political science from Yale University and holds an MBA from Stanford's Graduate School of Business.

Sandro Mina
Sandro Mina is a co-founding Managing Director of Sverica International and is based in the Boston office. He currently serves on several portfolio company boards including Ackerman Security Systems, Center Rock, Creative Catalog Concepts, iCoat Company, OASIS Group Ltd and Prospect Education. Mr. Mina also serves on the board of the Swedish School of Boston. He was previously President and CEO of Cameraworld.com, one of Sverica's pre-fund portfolio companies. In earlier careers, Mr. Mina worked in the public and private sectors in a number of industries, including technology (United Nations Computing Centre and Storage Technology), banking (Citibank, Goldman, Sachs & Co. and VISA) and telecommunications (consultant for a large European company). A native of Italy and Sweden, Mr. Mina earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Engineering from Imperial College at the University of London and his MBA degree at the Graduate School of Business at Stanford University.

Tim Ludwig
Tim Ludwig is Managing Partner at Ohana Capital, a private equity firm that invests in search funds and profitable lower middle-market companies. Prior to founding Ohana Capital, Mr. Ludwig was President of a privately-held, commercial real estate company where he oversaw projects totaling over $150 million in value and led teams in asset management, acquisitions, and dispositions. Mr. Ludwig also served in an executive role at a middle-market manufacturing business, worked in business development at a venture-backed start-up, and began his career as a consultant with Arthur Andersen Business Consulting. He holds a BA from The College of Wooster (Phi Beta Kappa, honors) and an MBA from the Ross School at the University of Michigan, where he was a student member of the Wolverine Venture Fund.

Todd Sandoz
Currently a Managing Director at Credit Suisse and Co-Head of the Equity Department for the Americas as well as responsible for equity capital markets risk globally. In addition to these roles, he is the co chair for the committee that governs and commits capital to illiquid equity exposures (such as financial market structure holdings and pre-IPO exposures) for the Investment Bank. After graduating from Yale with a BA in Economics, he started his career at Citadel Investments in Chicago focusing on convertible bond arbitrage strategies, convertible credit trading, and equity derivatives trading. Todd moved from Citadel to Credit Suisse in Hong Kong where he spent 9 years and held a number of roles in the Credit Suisse Equity Department culminating with responsibility for all of the bank's equity derivatives and convertibles business as well as equity trading and execution across Asia Pacific. In 2006 Todd relocated to New York with Credit Suisse where he assumed global responsibility for equity share trading across block trading, program trading, electronic trading, syndicate block risk, as well as the convertible bond group in 2007 prior to moving into his current role in 2009.

Tom Cassutt
Mr. Cassutt is a Managing Partner at TD Investment Company, and the Chief Financial Officer for American Security Products, a leading manufacturer of high-security safes. He also serves as Co-President of Nelson Nameplate Company, a manufacturer of durable graphics and membrane switches. Prior to joining Nelson, Mr. Cassutt worked as the Controller of Bristol Corporation from 1978 to 1984. He currently sits on the board of Nelson Nameplate Company, American Security Products and Columbia Sanitary Products. Mr. Cassutt received his Bachelor’s degree in Physics from the University of California, Irvine, and his MBA from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business.
